Student Council is an organization run by Saint Mark's student leaders in cooperation with the moderators. Student Council strives to promote a sense of school unity and school spirit by stimulating interest and offering opportunities for every person in the school to participate in school wide projects and activities. Student Council is also the voice of the students to the administration and faculty.
There are 16 elected officers for Student Council. There are four Student Council Officers, four Senior Class Officers, four Junior Class Officers, and four Sophomore Class Officers. These students make up the Executive Council and are the main decision making group of the Student Council. There are no Freshman Officers; however, there are four Freshman Representatives to the Executive Council. These students are selected during the summer by the Student Council and Class Moderators.
Student Council meetings are held once a month. The meetings are held during the school day so they don't conflict with other activities. You must be a member of Student Council to attend the meetings.
Any student at Saint Mark's can join Student Council. You can be a Homeroom Representative (HR Rep), a Representative at Large or an Officer. But, you don't need to be a member of Student Council to participate in or help plan the activities.
HR Reps are students selected by their homeroom to represent their homeroom to the Student Council. Each homeroom elects two HR Reps. HR Reps attend all meetings and have the very important job of relaying all the information about Student Council activities to their homeroom. They should also gather information from their homeroom to present at the meetings. HR Reps are also required to participate in various activities.
A Rep at Large is a member of Student Council who does not represent a specific homeroom, but rather represents the students in general. Reps at Large may participate in all activities and are responsible for relaying Student Council info to the student body. However, Reps at Large are not invited to Student Council meetings until they have completed two activities. To become a Rep at Large, a student must obtain 50 student signatures on a petition.
