Saint Mark’s High School will hold two events to honor and support veterans and their families on Veterans Day, November 11.

The first event is a Veterans Day Breakfast. We welcome veterans and active military members and their families from their alumni, student families, and the community at large. The family style breakfast is free. Donations are welcome to support the Corporal Stephen M. McGowan Fund. Named in honor of Stephen McGowan, a 1996 graduate of Saint Marks who was killed in Iraq in 2005 while serving in the army, the fund provides financial assistance for the children of active-duty military and veterans to attend Saint Mark’s. The breakfast will begin promptly at 7:30 AM in the school gymnasium and will conclude by 9 AM. Register by clicking the button to the right.

At 10 AM on the same day, we will host the inaugural Corporal Stephen M. McGowan 20K Challenge. The challenge is a 20-kilometer trek to be held on the school’s track. School President and veteran, Tom Fertal, will signal the start of the event and participate himself by carrying a 20-pound pack for 20 kilometers or 50 laps around the track, a total of 12.4 miles. Fertal has set a goal of raising $20,000 for the Corporal Stephen McGowan Fund.

Individuals and teams are welcome to participate in the challenge. There is no fee to register. All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $200. Donation pages for all participants will be created upon registration. Individual participants are encouraged to carry a 20-pound pack but are not required. Teams are expected to have at least one pack to be shared amongst the team members. Teams may complete laps en masse or in a relay fashion or in a combination of both. The event will conclude at 3 PM, 5 hours from the start, regardless of laps completed by participants.

The event is presented as a “challenge,” not a race. There are no awards for time. Recognition will be given for top fundraisers. This event is open to the public. Food will be available. Veterans and active military who would like to support participants are welcome to do so. Saint Mark’s students and faculty will also be on hand to support participants.
