Physical Education

  • Conditioning Games

    This course is designed to provide students with aerobic conditioning activities taught mainly through team sports and various games. All classes are structured and designed in a continuous manner where minimal rest is provided. A rigorous one-period workout occurs during each class. Classroom activities include: conditioning games, team handball, football, volleyall, ultimate frisbee, basketball, etc.
  • Fit for Life

    FIT FOR LIFE
    Open to Grade: 11 and 12

    Course:
    Fit for Life is Health and PE elective open to 11th and 12th graders who have successfully completed sophomore and junior PE. The course is designed primarily to expose students to skills, techniques, strategies and resources to enable them to establish and maintain a lasting “whole-body wellness” lifestyle after
    high school.

    An emphasis is placed on the factors that influence health and wellness, particularly individual behaviors. Fit for Life combines fundamentals of nutrition and healthy diet, fitness, life skills and wellness centered on health, addiction and relationship issues. Topics covered include nutrition, diet, healthy cooking, fitness, muscle development and toning principles, stress management, personal finance, self defense, and contemporary health issues.
  • Health

    This course covers all aspects of wellness; social, physical, emotional, and intellectual.  Topics include physical fitness, nutrition, infectious diseases, substance abuse prevention, and mental health.

    This course is required for ALL FRESHMAN.
  • PE 11

    This course is required for juniors.
     
    This course is non-phased, coeducational, and geared toward lifetime sports.  When two junior classes meet the same period, students are offered the choice of two different sports such as archery or flag football.  Students select eight different units throughout the semester.  This course also provides students with the opportunity to participate in activities outside the school such as bowling, skiing, and golf field trips.

  • Health & Fitness 7113

    Health education at SMH is a co-educational course taught at the ninth grade level.  This course covers all aspects of wellness, including social, physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being. The curriculum includes topics such as physical fitness, nutrition, infectious diseases, substance abuse prevention and mental health. The goal of the course is for students to learn to make wise decisions regarding their own personal lifestyles as well as the health and safety of others. In addition, students will participate in physical education during this course. The units offered consist of conditioning games, fitness activities, and team sports.
  • P.E. Assistant 7164

    This class provides the student with the opportunity to participate in a leadership course. All students enrolled in the course will have the opportunity to do the following: lead calisthenics, help demonstrate skills, display knowledge of a sport while officiating class games, and assist the teacher with the organization of equipment and the playing fields. Seniors interested in related professions will gain valuable experience from this course as well as benefit from the physical activity. Only those students who exemplify positive attitudes and leadership qualities will be accepted into this course at the discretion of the Department. Interested students must fill out an application obtained from a teacher.
  • PE Assistant

    This class provides the student with the opportunity to participate in a leadership course.   • Physical Education 1 7123

     
    This course is required for sophomores.
     
    This class is non-phased, co-educational, and geared toward the physical development of skills and knowledge of eight different units.  These units include team sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, and floor hockey.  Also, this course includes individual activities such as weight training, conditioning exercises, and table tennis. 
  • Physical Education 2 7133

    This course is required for juniors.
